Justin Gartner and his two-month old daughter, Isabella Aria, pose for a portrait with his permanent tattoo of her footprints in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.

The Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara will hold its second annual silent art auction beginning July 16, in an effort to raise money for the Brooks Institute student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). The auction will feature the top 20 photographs selected from the Brooks Institute’s weekly photojournalism competition. The “Week in Pictures” feature may be viewed on the NPPA student Web site at www.brooksnppa.org. The NPPA student officers, advisor and guest editor choose the winners from the students’ weekly digital submissions.

“I was struck by the outstanding quality of the work,” says judge and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Larry Price. “It took a very long time to narrow down.”

The winning images started with an original 315, and were whittled down to 90 by local California photographers, including Dana Bowler of the Ventura County Star, Lucas Jackson of Reuters and Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Wells of the L.A. Times. The remaining 90 were then sent to Price for an ultimate decision.

“The images had to be strong graphically and aesthetically, and they had to read quickly,” Price says of choosing the winners. He advises students competing elsewhere to not submit work that may be too visually complicated. “Get together a group of your favorite photos and pick the ones that strike you the most when you first see them.”

The top 20 images will be on display in the main hallway of the Brooks Institute Ventura campus, and will also be available for viewing on the NPPA Web site, www.brooksnppa.org. Bids start at $50, and with more than one hundred active members, the Brooks Institute NPPA chapter is the largest in the country. The money will allow members to operate their Web site, hold student competitions and invite professional photographers to give lectures and demonstrations.

“It’s exciting not only for winners, but for students who contribute,” explains NPPA chapter advisor Greg Cooper. “It encourages them to participate weekly because Larry Price could be looking at their work. There’s always a great variety of work, but this particular batch of top twenty is pretty extraordinary.”
